Swim in tears.
Disney has cancelled the release of the 1989 animated classic, The Little Mermaid. The move came after the last three re-releases; Monsters, Inc., Beauty and the Beast, and Finding Nemo, fell below earnings expectations at less than $50 million each. Although Disney’s first 3D re-release of The Lion King was a success, raking in $94 million in 2011, the last three films had way weaker sales.
Conversion to 3D of the Little Mermaid started back in November, and the film was slated for release later this year. The underwater fantasy tells the story of little mermaid Ariel, who dreams to be a ’part of your world’ one day.
Too bad Princess Ariel won’t be swimming back to the big screen after all.
