We thought 1 billion was impossible this year in spite of Justin Bieber crooning to his Baby.
On December 21, Gangnam Style, the massive global hit by South Korean pop sensation PSY, reached 1 billion views on YouTube. This piece of music history came less than a month after the viral tune surpassed Justin Bieber’s Baby as the most watched video on the site.
PSY burst into the scene in July with his bizarre horse-riding dance, which has swept all corners of the globe. His success has placed him among the A-listers in the entertainment industry, scoring him invites and appearances here and there. He has rubbed elbows with celebrities and world leaders—and has inspired many of them to sample his trotting moves.
Just when we’re starting to think it’s the demise of Gangnam Style, another popular public figure, another parody, or another copycat comes into the scene to prove the viral hit isn’t dying down anytime soon.
Kevin Allocca, YouTube trends manager, credits PSY’s success “to the universal appeal of catchy music — and er, great equine dance moves.”
The next challenge for PSY is—how does one top it off?
Here’s a way to add to the 1 billion ++ views:
