The producers and actors of the superhero film, The Avengers, are certainly proud and happy souls this week.
The Disney Films movie earned $200.3 million in its U.S. debut Friday, taking the top spot as the highest earning film at its opening in the U.S. The huge debut earnings of the Marvel-character film eclipsed the Harry Potter finale, the previous record holder for top grossing U.S. film opening. The final installment of the Harry Potter film series earned $169.2 million at its opening last year.
The Avengers has already earned a whopping $641.8 million in movie cinemas around the world. Dave Hollis, Disney’s head of distribution, expressed confidence the film will earn much more in the next few weeks.
This box office blockbuster was directed by Joss Whedon, famous for Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
