New details have emerged about the day Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment. Chris Goodman, a close friend and rep for the 27-year-old singer, reveals Winehouse died in her bed Saturday after lying down to nap. Her body was discovered by a security guard.
“She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep, and when he went to wake her he found she wasn’t breathing. He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed,” Goodman tells TMZ.
Authorities have labeled Winehouse’s death “unexplained” until autopsy results are reviewed. The singer had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse. She did several stints in rehab and was hospitalized for a drug overdose in 2007. Winehouse is survived by her parents, brother and ex-husband Blake Fielder Civil.
Her family released a statement Sunday saying they are “bereft” over her death.
“Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time,” the Winehouse family said.
