David Letterman Reveals Extortion Plot

On his CBS show Thursday, David Letterman revealed he was the victim of a $2 million extortion attempt. The talk show host revealed the attempted extortion started 3 weeks ago when he found a package in the backseat of his car.

The package contained a letter from someone claiming to have evidence that Letterman had sex with employees of his program. The individual sought $2 million from Letterman to keep the information quiet.

Letterman, 62, decided to take action against the suspect. With the help of the Manhattan District Attorney’s special prosecution bureau, Letterman gave the extortionist a counterfeit $2 million check. The suspect, a producer on CBS’ 48 hours, was arrested Thursday. CBS did not identify the producer but several reports have identified him as Robert Haldeman.

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman told his audience Thursday. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury. I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done … The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show.”

“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people. I need to certainly protect my family,” he added.

Letterman was married to his longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko in March. They have a 6-year-old son, Harry.
