So while some people in “this economy” are struggling to make ends meet, others are bored actually living in London and want to spend money re-creating London in New York. Madonna recently purchased a $40 million upper east side townhouse.

Madge has signed a contract to buy a four-story, Georgian-style townhouse on East 81st Street for about $40 million, sources said.

That’s some $5 million less than the original asking price.

“The townhouse is perfect for Madonna,” according to one source.

“She’s trying to recreate London in New York City, and this is in the style of a London townhouse.”

The mansion has 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, 9 fireplaces, an elevator, a grotto, a two-car garage, a 3,000 sq. ft. garden and a wine cellar. I guess Madge has some remods planned though – I mean, she probably has to make sure to rip out every existing bolt, screw and board and replace it with ones boated over from London. I wonder if Jesus will have a permanent room?
